Artistic community in interwar Bydgoszcz, after regaining independence, had been formed by artists coming from different regions of Poland, as well as artists returning from abroad. One of them was Marian Faczyński (1889-1940). He was born in Lvov; painter and teacher, co-organizer of artistic events, founder of the School Museum in Bydgoszcz. This article is the first biographical note dedicated to Faczyński, which focuses on his artistic activity in Nakło nad Notecią and Bydgoszcz. He settled down in Nakło nad Notecią in 1921, starting his work as a teacher in the Bolesław Krzywousty State Grammar School, where he was teaching drawing and craftwork. Living in Nakło, Faczyński felt the lack of local artistic community, thus he maintained strong ties with nearby Bydgoszcz, which origins dated back to the early 1920s, when he was invited to participate in the first exhibition of the Bydgoszcz painters (1924), organized in the Municipal Museum. As his artistic relationships intensified, he was invited to consecutive exhibitions, including An Exhibition of Paintings by Bydgoszcz Artists (1926), The Autumn Exhibition ofLocal and Pomeranian Painters and Sculptors (1929), and An Exhibition of Paintings and Sculptures of the Association of Pomeranian Artists (1930). In 1931, Marian Faczyński moved to Bydgoszcz, and in 1932 he started teaching drawing and craftwork in the State Classical Grammar School. He continued to participate in numerous local exhibitions, organized in 1932-1938. The practically unknown and forgotten paintings by Faczyński, represented by a very modest legacy, are reminded by exhibition catalogs, old reviews and a small group of replicas of paintings that have not survived. Marian Faczyński - an extraordinary teacher of “ordinary” drawings and craftworks, is commemorated by stories of his students - Tadeusz Nowakowski and Witold Nowacki - who in addition to his professional skills highlighted his involvement in a broad artistic education. This activity of Faczyński is reflected by the foundation of the School Museum in Bydgoszcz (1935), which is described in the last part of the article.
