January 1945 offensive, Vistula, Toruń, trenchesAbstrakt
The author presents reflections on the construction of trenches, supervised by the Soviet army, which were to stop the anticipated attack of the German army from the side of the Vistula River in January 1945 in order to evacuate Toruń fortress. The author bases on the publication Ausbruch der Besatzung von Thorn written in 1988 by Hans Peter Range, former cadet of the Wehrmacht officer cadet school in occupied Toruń. As a member of the Toruń fortress garrison, besieged by the Red Army, he participated in the battle for getting out to the remote Wehrmacht main forces. He described precisely his own experiences, front-line soldiers and staff officers, copies of situation reports, orders, and maps found in German archives, and those obtained from the Soviets.
