Abstrakt

The article presents permanent and floral ornaments used commonly in Bydgoszcz cemeteries. It features presentation of sculptures, including angels and mourners, describing their role in the space of cemeteries. Symbols are an important component for decorating gravestones. Their proper reading requires the knowledge of a code for creating a specific sign. In many cases, the meaning of permanent symbols coincides with the meaning of floral symbols, and opposite. Unfortunately, at the turn of the 21st century, the society lost the knowledge of the code of symbols. The sources of disappearance of decoding skills include reduction of gravestone size and replacement of live plants with artificial plants
