Abstrakt

A difficult period, during which Bydgoszcz as a result of the first partition of Poland in 1772 became part of the Prussian monarchy, had its impact on the local education system. The order of the Jesuits, who settled down in the city on the Brda River in the first half of the 17th century, responsible for secondary education, was disbanded based on the papal brief issued by Pope Clement XIV. The Bydgoszcz Jesuits - with the approval from the new Prussian authorities - continued educational activity in their college until 1780, when it was closed down. The point of gravity, which was previously in the Society of Jesus, was moved from the Jesuit College to the Royal Catholic Grammar School, founded on June 1, 1781. The main assumption of this work was presentation of the history of the school, describing previously unexplored aspects such as organizational structure, subjects taught in the school, students’ attendance and the role it played in the education system in the 18th century and the first years of the 19th century.
