Abstrakt

Kazimierz Ulatowski arrived in Bydgoszcz in the end of 1920 or early 1921 due to his appointment as director of the School of the Art Industry. He had all skills necessary for the job. In 1903-1906, he studied at the Faculty of Architecture in the Higher Technical School of Berlin-Charlottenburg (Königliche Technische Hochschule in Charlottenburg). He continued his education in Stuttgart, where in 1908 he received diploma in architectural-engineering. He served as an intern at well-known Cracow architect Franciszek Mączyński. He moved to Poznań in July 1910. During five years of his stay in Bydgoszcz he worked in many fields, on a mission to restore Polish culture in areas so severely affected for many years of Prussian rule. The history of the city remembers him as director of the School of the Art Industry, but his contribution to the artistic life of Bydgoszcz, which returned to Poland in 1920, was invaluable. He was involved in establishing societies for local intelligentsia, preparing lectures to local residents and exhibitions, and founding the local “Zachęta” Society for the Encouragement of Fine Arts. He designed buildings, restored historic sites and participated in the competition to utilize Bismarcktower. He was also writing exhibition and theater play reviews. It is worth noting that he played an important role in the culture of Bydgoszcz in the early 1920s.
