The most popular bands in Poland in the 1980s were mainstream rock bands (Maanam, Lady Pank, and Oddział Zamknięty), but there was a noticeable, growing role of punk, new- and cold-wave groups, which was reflected in the Bydgoszcz area. Jarocin hosted a huge “independent music” festival, inviting the most prominent alternative bands. In that time, two Bydgoszcz bands became known nationally, namely Abaddon and Variete. Some professional musicians, just like in the previous years, were taking advantage of contracts abroad, going mainly to play in restaurants and circuses. In 1981-1983, when martial law was imposed in our country, the city was organizing fewer events during which bands were able to perform. Estrada Bydgoska and the Polish Jazz Association, Branch in Bydgoszcz continued their active work in preparation of music events. New agencies were established as well, including the Association of Entertainment Musicians “STOMUR”, “Alma-art” (supporting students), “Youth Culture Agency,” and Art Agency “Puls”. They organized many concerts in the city. An important place on the cultural map of Bydgoszcz was the student club “Beanus”, promoting a lot of bands playing music in many different styles.
