Intensive development of European regionalism, particularly in the end of the 19th century, led to establishment of a number of scientific societies. The main purpose of their activity was research on local history and collection of historical souvenirs as well as records documenting the current life of the region. Thanks to activities of Bydgoszcz societies, not only myriad memorabilia were saved and collected, but many historical studies were published. Collections of scientific societies and private collections of members of these societies were frequently donated to the Bydgoszcz Library and Museum. WiMBP in Bydgoszcz constantly supplements its regional resources; this activity is supported by the regional legal deposit awarded to the institution in 1997. An important event for the Bydgoszcz regional heritage was the opening of the Regional Reading Room in the Municipal Library of Bydgoszcz in 1964. Readers can take advantage of a sizeable book collection, featured not only in the Regional Studio, but also in the Department of Special Collections and the Warehouse. It can be distinguished by diversity, starting from extensive monographs and finishing on single leaflets. The offer to readers includes books, scientific journals, magazines, maps, illustrations, posters, placards, and documents from social life. Searches are supported by a huge library file and numerous references, available also online. Regional collections of WiMBP in Bydgoszcz can be found in digital version on the Internet.
