The constitutional right of access to public information

The right to public information, as intended by the framers of the constitution, is supposed to ensure that active citizens have the opportunity to obtain knowledge about everything related to the broadly understood functioning of the state. Only well-informed citizens who have access to a wide range of information on every area in which the state is active are able to make informed decisions that affect not only themselves, but also their local community and the society in which they live. The article analyzes current legal regulations concerning the right to public information. Particular emphasis has been placed on presenting the rights of persons wishing to exercise this right and the corresponding obligations of public authorities, as well as the legal remedies available to individuals in cases where the exercise of this right becomes difficult or even impossible. The study aims not only to discuss the basic issues related to the right to obtain public information, to present the position of the doctrine and current case law, but also to explain the axiological foundations of this right.
