About Animals and for Animals. The Influence of Selected Works of Culture and Art on the Discourse on Animal Rights

Reflections on the nature of animals and the relationship between humans and the natural world have been present in human culture almost since its inception. This topic has been addressed by thinkers and scientists from various fields, as well as artists. The aim of this article is to reflect on the ways in which animals are represented, as well as the relationship between humans and culture towards them in selected works of art. This article also aims to outline various strategies for representing animals and to assess the impact of these strategies on social sensitivity and awareness of the fate of animals. It demonstrates strategies of emotional manipulation—not understood pejoratively, but as an inherent element of art as a medium—used by artists to convey their demands regarding animal rights or to provoke their audience to reflect and discuss specific topics. Finally, the article will also ask the question: how can art, by shaping social trends and social sensitivity, leave its mark on legal systems, and is such an influence a desirable phenomenon?
