Abstract

What is considered in this text is the problem of patriotic education in state schools. The author undertakes the problem on the ground of the contemporary Anglo-Saxon philosophy of education, referring to and commenting on the conceptions elaborated in the framework of that philosophy, particularly by Harry Brighouse. After setting forth a thesis about the diminishing the status of patriotic education in favor of citizen education by Anglo-Saxon philosophers of education, the author focuses on presenting five factors which contribute to patriotic education. Those factors are: national identity, attitudes to that identity, the state preferences as to the promotion of particular patriotic attitudes, the role of state schooling in pursuing that process, and the space for teaching history within it. The author, analyzing the arguments relevant for those five factors, concludes that the contemporary Anglo-Saxon philosophy of education is rather reluctant towards teaching patriotism in schools. Such an attitude differs from the conception of patriotic education promoted in Polish schools. Is the Polish conception defensible? The author concludes his analyses pointing to two lines which might help in justifying the Polish approach.
