Janusz Esman was born in Bydgoszcz on July 22, 1940. He was the son of Tadeusz, an archivist, director and long-term employee of the National Archive in Bydgoszcz, who also wrote memoirs. After law studies atthe Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, he started a brief career as a scholar. Since 1969, he was employed as a legal adviser in, among others, the Regional Branch of the Social Insurance Company in Bydgoszcz. In 1980 and 1981 he stayed in Iraq as the Main Specialist for Legal Affairs in Construction of Plants. After his return, he settled down in Rogoźno working as legal adviser. He worked as social activist in the Society of the Friends of Rogoźno. He retired in 2006.
He dedicated his memoirs to description of his life under German occupation in Bydgoszcz and the initial years after the end of World War II. In his memoirs, he revealed historical knowledge and a skill to observe attentively everything that accompanied war reality in the city. He appears not only as an insightful observer, but also as a person experiencing effects of political and social changes in the postwar history of the city.
