Abstract

This article describes conditions of daily recreation for residents of Bydgoszcz in the 1910s, in the context of increasing pollution and environmental degradation (which took place in that period as a result of investment pressure and inept policy of the authorities which failed to effectively protect the environment). The article deals with the problem of contamination and pollution of the environment as well as uncleanliness of the city, which in the past was known as “one of the cleanest in the country, full of green areas and flowers.” Other topics discussed in the article included excessive noise, dust and gas emissions, contamination of the river, and sanitary condition; in addition, the author described the policy and activities of the local authorities in the scope of improvement of the condition and protection of the natural environment.
