Abstract

Th e fi lm city of Bydgoszcz in 1989–1991 is a multifaceted phenomenon. It encompassed changes in cinema ownership, film distribution, cinephile rituals, and cinematographic everyday reality – dealing with economic,
trade and organizational problems. Th is article is based on researchof local newspapers, highlighting features distinctive of this period, describing such aspects as rapid expansion of the video service market and carnivalization
(in the form of reviews, festivals, presentation series) of the film culture. It also draws a certain map of a bygone era – former cinemas and other venues hosting fi lm-related meetings.
