The rate of natural increase and the net migration rate as factors contributing to population change in Bydgoszcz

The subject of the studies is population of Bydgoszcz and its changes in 1946-2020 caused by the ratę of natural increase and the net migration ratę. The purpose of the article is showing the significance of the ratę of natural increase and the net migration ratę in the actual population growth of the city in 1946-1995, followed by a population decline recorded in the next years. A statistical basis for the studies was data from the Central Statistical Office featured in Demographic Yearbooks and other publications listed below the tables. The entire period of the studies that continued for 75 years was divided into subperiods resulting from figures of the ratę of natural increase. As a result of changes in the ratę of natural increase and net migration rates, population varied in individual subperiods. In 1946-1995, population of the city increased by 250,000, which was significantly influenced by the net migration rate erather than the rate of natural increase. In the past 25 years (1996-2020) the city recorded a population decline, resulting from a negative rate of natural increase, accompanied by a negative net migration rate. The city reported a population decline totaling 37,000 residents. Conclusions: Population growth in the city was possible thanks to economic development; in the period covered by the studies there were considerable changes in natural and migration movements of population; changes in the ratę of natural increase contributed to the decline in the share of children age 0-14 and people age 15-29, and the share of people age 60+ in the total population of the city increased several times.
