Patriotic songs of Jan Gall as an expression of national identification in the years of partitions

Abstract

Jan Gall (1856-1912) was a Polish composer of solo and choral songs. He wrote ab. 400 choral songs. He also led an activity in Lviv as a conductor of the „Echo – Macierz” choir. His songs had a great popularity. His songs were in repertoire of other Lviv singing societies. they were very popular. Apart from folk songs, Jan Gall also wrote patriotic songs. Among them, there are two hymns written for the Lviv singing societies: Hasło Sokołów and Hasło Echistów, published in 1903 in a cycle of 150 songs and songs for male and mixed choir. they were often performed in Lviv during various patriotic celebrations. this kind of repertoire reveals sensitive personality of Jan Gall and his deeply involved in building the national identity. Simultaneously, it is an clearly testimony to his commitment to strengthening and developing all forms of Polish culture in the artistic field in the years of the partitions.
