The article contains a summary and assessment of the activities of the military clergy of the Russian army during the First World War. The author, based on the materials of the Russian State Historical Archive (St. Petersburg), the journal “Herald of the military and naval clergy”, memoirs of the Protopresbyter of the Army and Navy G.I. Shavelsky pays particular attention to the interaction of the Orthodox clergy with representatives of the clergy and members of other faiths in the Russian army, the relations of the Polish population and front-line soldiers, as well as the forms and methods of activity of the clergy in the army, the place, role and importance of the military priest in maintaining morale of personnel, first aid, if necessary.
