Visual ethnography in educational research

This article provides an overview of the theory and practice of visual research in education. It introduces visual ethnography as one of the available research methodologies and selected data collection techniques. The attempt to trace the applications of visual methodology shows that images can be the basis for analyzing social and cultural views and the process of perceiving phenomena by pupils, students, teachers, educators or members of other communities related to education. Ethical issues related to the publication of visual data, such as anonymity or the scope of the negotiated construction of meaning, are also addressed. The main reflections highlighted the importance of visual ethnography as a key methodology for capturing rich
data to access educational spaces, as well as the importance of participatory techniques in data collection and the role of technology as an undeniable “participant” in the research process.
