Abstract

Researches of literary reception among children aren’t frequently practiced in Poland. Information about the reception of literary works including disability topic by children in elementary schools (from the 4th grade to the 8th) can be helpful for development of local inclusive education. These researches were made by questionnaires in the group of 298 children in the age of 9 to 16. Students of chosen elementary schools had to answer questions focused on behaviour of female protagonists of two novels: Konstancja’s Week (Tydzień Konstancji) by Olga Masiuk and The Lord’s of the Bolts Chest (Skrzynia Władcy Piorunów) by Marcin Kozioł. These researches showed correlation between reception of the text and age, inclusion level in student’s environment, access to the local cultural centers in the region and personal contact of a child with people with disabilities. There is possibility to conclude that the last of mentioned factors has the largest impact on the way of disability topics reception by students of elementary schools. Contrary to common opinion, disability itself isn’t considered as taboo by children and due to this fact there is a need to develop inclusive activity at schools since with the youngest grades, including use of the children’s literature.
