This article is dedicated to young people, who at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries used the educational
care institutions – homes for the orphans, occupational classes, corrective institutions, halls of residence.
In the last thirty years of the 19th century the number of such institutions has definitely increased. Institutionalization of the education and socialization of the young generation, especially the youth from the poor,
was a hallmark of social life in the modern era. The purpose of this article is describing, which problems
connected with the juvenescence of the charges of institutions were existing in historical sources and which
were unmentioned and unsaid or were found largely taboo. Institutional sources, periodicals and belles-lettres
were analysed. Attention was also paid to the ability to analyse sources using new theoretical concepts in
pedagogy and sociology.
