Abstract

The following article is a report of an ethnographic case study on the conceptualization of eugenic abortion by 22 Polish 2nd degree university students from the faculty of Special Education. Eugenic abortion was explored in November 2016 in the perspective of two universal patterns of cultural approach to anomaly concept of Douglas (2002) as an interpretation and physical control of this phenomenon. The main research question was: how eugenic abortion is conceptualized by students of Special Education? The study involved searching for answers to specific questions concerning: students’ attitudes towards eugenic abortion and its conditions. The last of the specific research questions was related to the theoretical perspective on the basis of which students justify their attitude towards eugenic abortion. The results of qualitative inquiry indicated a triad of concept categories explicitly concerning eugenic abortion(from disapproval through approval to the freedom of choice and relativism, depending on the conditions and circumstances). In addition, the results revealed a triad of categories of tacit knowledge, indicating the categories, which were also revealed in the data despite the fact that no particular research questions was formulated. These were: personal attitude towards the child / person with a disability, the subject of special education, the rhetoric of students’ own narratives in the context of the theoretical grounds of disability models, characterizing their own attitudes and third tacit category of contradiction on the line: informant – others.
