On timeless values of university in the thought of Kazimierz Twardowski

The author tackles the question of timeless values of a university, referring to the thought of a Polish philosopher, psychologist and educator, creator and organizer of the Lvov-Warsaw school – Kazimierz Twardowski, with particular emphasis on the essay of captivating wisdom and unique beauty entitled “The dignity of the University” (1933). The thoughts contained in Twardowski’s essay have still not lost their relevance. The values such as truth, reliability, honesty, responsibility, tolerance, justice, creativity, dignity are timeless, particularly valuable and extremely important in the sphere of science and social life, regardless of the occurring world trends or promoted fashion. The timeliness of Twardowski’s thoughts are clearly certified by the rhetoric of contemporary documents on universities, for example: Magna Charta Universitatum (1988); Prague Declaration (2001); Glasgow Declaration (2005) and others, in which authors from different perspectives refer to the writer’s thoughts of the essay on “The dignity of the University”. From the perspective of carried considerations on the timeless values of a university, in the light of Twardowski views, emerges for the present the essential question, namely what tasks of the university in the 21st century are. in fact, the answer draws attention to the eternal tasks which throughout the history have appeared in the university, that is to say: researching, teaching, social service, attention to the university values, care for the ethos and development of the academic culture.
