Abstract

Amin Maalouf attempts to describe the modern world and its problems. One of the biggest issues is the tribal concept of identity. The basic premise of this concept is the inflexible division of we-they. A lot of factors have had influence on the tribal concept of identity, for example: history, religion, ideologies, globalization. Maalouf proposes to change this concept. We must focus on three rules: reciprocity, respect for the law and complement of cultures. There are three obstacles on the way to this ideal world: the temptation of the precipice, the wall and the peak. Once they have been overcome it will be possible to live in a new, better world.
