When Things Change into Words

This paper focuses on the principal assumption that political correctness consists in isolating words from reality. Then such areas as freedom, tolerance, and democracy become empty terms. Words isolated from things may be subject to any manipulation. This is a basic premise of the illusion that makes up the essence of political correctness. Inasmuch as a thing (reality) is the place and time of experiencing and struggling, the words isolated from things may serve propaganda and uncontrolled manipulation. Words isolated from things are used to construct ideologies. They may arouse social fear, serve stigmatization of individuals or social groups. Isolated from things and ideologically determined meanings facilitate the “disappearance” of some words and appearance of others. Apparently, it is a more certain maneuver than struggling with reality. Contemporary sociological hermeneutics describes correctly the phenomena under discussion. The “thinking thing” is confronted with the following: disenchantment, narcissism, fragile identity (or uncertainty in its definition), experiments with freedom, risk society, and lack of ontological safety. The words-things are the background for these categories of modernity. Their particular understanding, or else essential modification, become a context for the development of the culture of ideologized correctness. According to the latter phrase respective meanings are given to words isolated from things.
