Power in Children’s Peer Groups in Foucauldian Perspective

Over the past several decades modernist thinking that has dominated understanding of childhood has been challenged by postmodernist and feminist poststructural perspectives. They tend to disrupt and challenge many of the universalized ‘truths’ about ‘the child’ established in modernist tradition. Postmodernist and poststructural perspectives have been applied to many aspects of early childhood studies, drawing explicitly on the work of M. Foucault. The author of the paper presents postmodernist view of children and childhood, briefly discusses M. Foucault’s theory of power and tries to show how power penetrates children’s interactions, expresses itself in language and affects children’s experience.
