The Child’s Image in a historical and comparative perspective. The Former Times in the Modernity, the Modernity in the Former Times

The paper is concerned with the issue of the child’s image in the medieval culture as seen from the perspective of two selected ways of perception of the child, that are present in the modernity. These can be defined as the Romantic idea of the child and the idea of the child as a non-adult. The analysis of the problem in such a perspective should give answers to two following questions. The first one is related to the presence of an idea of the child as being different from an adult in the medieval culture and society. Therefore, it also refers to the thesis of discovering or inventing a child and childhood only in the modern times, advanced in the discourse on the history of childhood. The second question, assuming the positive answer for the first, concerns the medieval contents of these two ways perception of the child, their similarities and differences with the modern ones. Finally, one should note the child’s two images are not the only ones present in the Middle Ages. This epoch’s culture is characterized by a variety and complexity of ways in which the child was being perceived, and they should not been reduced – as is sometimes seen – only to one image.
