Abstract

What does the world think of Norway? A wealthy oil nation, midnight sun and skiing, polar bears, unified schools, happy students – what is a myth, and what is true? This text shows a short brief of Norwegian compulsory schooling. The aim is to present Norwegian school through reflections about organization, curriculum, values, aims and teacher’s role. Compulsory, equal education has been a pillar of Norwegian society. The text is fortified by the author’s own experience in both compulsory education, which is the base of Norwegian society, and outdoor education which is a schooling standard and has a strong impact on school life.
