Humboldt University or Vocational School? – the reason to find the balance between university education and vocational training. German exemplification

The article is an attempt to reconstruct the binary system of higher education in the Federal Republic of Germany. Referring to Humboldt’s idea of university I try to reconstruct the shape and the challenges of contemporary university. I also try to answer the question whether the vocational school (Fachhochschule) and universities in Germany coexist or compete against each other. The article is also an attempt to find the answer if Polish schools of higher education prepare students for future jobs. At the same time, having in mind the Humboldt’s idea, I try to answer the question whether there is a clear distinction between vocational training and university education. Many reports (e.g. UNDP, OECD) indicate that Polish schools do not prepare students for the future occupation. Recalling German exemplifications I try sketch out the possible scenario of development of Polish higher education system including the division between vocational training and university education.
