Teaching of mother tongues in Sweden

The paper addresses the model of language education in Sweden in the context of demographic changes in the society,as well as in the context of immigration and educational policies in Sweden and educational policies by the European Union. It draws attention to mother tongues tuition recognizing it is a one of the two trends of development, next to teaching of foreign languages. The paper highlights the status and forms of mother tongue tuition in relation to national, ethnic and cultural minorities. It emphasizes the status of three officially recognized minority languages, which are Finnish,Sami and Meankieli (Tornedal Finnish). It investigates the statistical data which indicate the popularity of mother tongues tuition at each educational level.Additionally, it considers educational opportunities for teachers of mother tongues and looks into the multidimensionality of the teachers’ roles. Finally, the paper maps out educational opportunities for immigrants and asylum seekers in the context of current legislation. A case is made that the multidimensionality of mother tongues education in Sweden facilitates maintaining of individual identities by national, ethnic and cultural minorities.
