The mother–child relationship is a fundamental for a child’s emotional, social, and cognitive development, including the formation of self-esteem. A particularly significant form of this relationship is the bond between a mother and her daughter, in which the mother frequently functions as the daughter’s first and most immediate role model, shaping her system of values, attitudes, and self-perception. The aim of this article is to present the results of a systematic review of studies devoted to the self-esteem of mothers and daughters within the context of the mother–daughter relationship. The review aimed to identify the theoretical frameworks and research methods employed in the analyzed studies, as well as to determine the conclusions drawn from existing empirical research concerning the levels of self-esteem among mothers and daughters and the relationships between their self-esteem within the context of their mutual relationship. The analysis indicates that the self-esteem of both parties develops within a dynamic system of mutual influences. At the same time, this issue remains insufficiently explored within the field of Polish pedagogical research.
