Between life, history, and literature – childhood in the autobiographical narratives of Jerzy Woszczynin

The aim of this article is to analyze the autobiographical works of Jerzy Woszczynin, a Polish writer who spent most of his life in Argentina, where he became one of the leading figures of the Polish literary diaspora. Although he emigrated as an adult, his literary output frequently returns to memories of childhood, treated as a lost world, a foundation of personal identity, and a point of reference in the narrative reconstruction of the past. This study examines these recollections within the framework of autobiographical narrative research. An interdisciplinary approach is adopted, combining methods from literary studies and narrative psychology, to demonstrate how childhood experiences, filtered through autobiographical memory, contribute to the process of constructing individual identity. The analysis draws on tools from narratology and research on autobiographical memory, while considering the structural and linguistic features of the texts as well as their historical and cultural contexts. The article explores the autobiographical dimension of Woszczynin’s writing, with particular emphasis on the ways in which childhood memories – rich in emotion, personal evaluation, and nostalgia – shape the narrative of the past and serve to construct personal identity in the context of migration and life abroad. The analysis of selected works shows that these recollections of childhood are not straightforward recordings of past events but are consciously constructed narratives, in which the selective organization and interpretation of memories emphasize key formative moments in the author’s biography. By integrating insights from narrative psychology and literary studies, the article offers a deeper understanding of the mechanisms governing the narrative construction of identity in autobiographical literature and aligns with contemporary interdisciplinary research trends that seek to bridge the gap between the humanities and the social sciences.
