Human capital theory – contexts of education and the labor market

The aim of the article is to reconstruct the category of human capital from the perspective of the sociology
of education. The author has attempted to confront the assumptions of the human capital theory, which
was created at the beginning of the 1960s, with the dynamics of the relationship between education and
educational background and the labor market and employment. The study presents both the genesis and the
essence of the concept of human capital and discusses the directions of its criticism. The theory of human
capital that perceives education as an investment that provides measurable benefits to individuals does not
find its confirmation in the contemporary social reality, in which there is the phenomenon of overeducation
and academic diploma inflation.
