Self-forgiveness and the struggle for moral goodness

Forgiveness is a contentious issue, particularly when perpetrators grant it to themselves following serious violations of others’ dignity. However, given the inherent weaknesses of human nature and the propensity to make morally imperfect decisions, self-forgiveness appears to be a necessity. To address concerns surrounding self forgiveness, it is important to analyse this concept and understand its nuances in relation to self-justification and self-pardoning. The essence of this type of forgiveness is to restore one’s sense of moral self-worth, which can only be achieved through a struggle for moral goodness.
