Abstract

The aim of the paper is to present various approaches to motivation, with particular consideration of the most current theory of motivation, i.e., the Self Determination Theory (SDT) by Edward L. Deci and Richard M. Ryan, along with its consequences for education. The author discusses the SDT in detail, including factors promoting the development of intrinsic motivation as the optimum form of motivation, as well as its benefits. On the basis of research results, were presented situations in which the motivation based on rewards and punishments (dominant in the Polish educational system) is effective, but were also emphasized dangers related to the “carrot-and-stick” approach. The paper ends with guidelines for parents and teachers on how to build intrinsic motivation.
